But she died three years into the writing.” I hoped my book would be published in my mother’s lifetime, that she would read it. “I knew I had something in ‘The Henna Artist.’ I just couldn’t be sure it would be published,” Joshi said. That her agent absolutely was not going to let her book out of the stable until it was ready, was so frustrating, says Joshi and yet so very right. That Joshi got an agent early, one who loved India and who appreciated the voice of protagonist Lakshmi, was exciting. Once published, in 2020, “The Henna Artist” instantly became a “Reese Witherspoon Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick” and soared to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List. Still, she didn’t know it would take 10 years to create a bestseller. She also imagined, if she could learn how to write a compelling novel and if it were to be published, maybe she could become a full-time author. She knew the magic and mystery of Jaipur and she had a sense of the story that played out there. She understood her mother’s culture, her native culture of India. ![]() She had a story to tell, her mother’s story, actually, or a version of it. Joshi’s reasons for writing her debut novel were many. She didn’t know then she could achieve all of that with a book. ![]() Her caveat was “just don’t let it be a murder.” She wanted to become famous for all the right reasons - talent, perseverance, achievement, reaching others and making a difference.
